What do I look like to you?
I don’t have an English first name as my parents didn’t want to leave me stuck with something I didn’t like for my entire life. I was supposed to pick my own name and insert it into my IC once I hit thirteen (hello puberty), but I skipped that because I didn’t know what to name myself then :( Trust me, I went through a whole bunch of trial and error names such as Catherine, Jennifer, Emily… but they didn’t really seem like ME.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE being a Jia Meei, but I just realised the importance of having a snappy memory friendly name- I don’t want to be remembered as ‘the girl with that funny Chinese name with the extra alphabet I can’t for the life of me remember’ or ehem the ’small sized girl’. Even more so when I’m in the workforce…
I think I’m ready to add an extra name to my Jia Meei Chen! ‘May’ (derived from my Meei) might work but I really don’t see myself as a May much…
Help: What name do you think will suit me best? :) Here’s a guide heehee.
Edit: Thank you heaps for your suggestions! I shall list ‘em all down for future reference :D
Jamie
Emily
May
Jam
Esther- Derlyn haha!

Cassandra Cactus Camomile wtf

May 24th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Hi, JM.. i’ve been reading your blog almost everyday, also think a simple English name suits u best. May sounds good, or Jam as your friends like to call you?
May 24th, 2008 at 8:59 pm
I’m all about funny names. Like STAR. OR MOON. OR RAIN. HAHAHA.
Gary’s more conventional and he said Esther.
:D
May 24th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
halo JM, i’m a silent reader. Think Jamie suits u…or something cool and simple..but can’t think of anything in particular. lol! i guess all parents must have hard times naming their kids.
May 24th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
PENELOPE! PRUDENCE! PRISCILLA! wtf
no la i think u should either get something which sounds like jiameei or something which starts with a c cuz sounds very power-woman. like.. cassandra chen wtf. or u know.. more exotic ones like cactus or camomile WTF

Your name is not even hard to remember seriously. Jia Meei or even Meei itself defines who you are. Your name is who your are, and how you are defined. Seriously.
My name is probably one of the weirdest and hardest and manly/boyish Chinese name in the whole wide world but I like it because that is me.
You don’t really need another name because Jia Meei is what and who you are. That’s the best name you can ever have! :)
Your Meei is pronounced just as Mei and May right?
May 25th, 2008 at 12:33 am
Alda: HAHAHA yeap Jamie sounds a lot like Jia Meei right! Powerful England names? Like Sunshine Chen or Rainy Chen?
Jo: Well… Emily the Strange
Yoyo: Hello there :) :) Haha I think I’ll reserve Jam as a special name for my close friends hee! Yeah I suppose May’s alright :/ Or actually if I forgo the whole English name thing I can just use my initials JM! Hmmmnmnmn
Elle: ISH is that what you’re gonna name your kids haha! Oh tell Gary I already have a friend named Esther! Can’t steal her name nuh-uh
Kim: Hello Kim :D Yeah Jamie’s what everyone thinks of at first thought heh. Yeah I can’t even think of a name for myself let alone my future kids :(
Tze: WTF Prudence is already marked as yours ok Pang! Something which sounds like Jia Meei = Jamie :/ WTF Cassandra Chen Corny Chen Crazy Chen actually I like Cactus mmn such class
Chee Lim: I dunno everyone I encountered so far had problems with remembering my names i.e. my lecturers :( Haha I thought your name was rather feminine actually! Yeah I quite like my name :) And yup it’s pronounced as ‘May’!
May 25th, 2008 at 1:11 am
amy chen…
May 25th, 2008 at 1:25 am
I agree that Jia Meei is perfectly fine!! And I don’t have any trouble remembering/pronouncing it! But I get what you mean, people always can’t pronounce my name!! Especially in Melbourne! T_T
Hmm, if really must change, I will say Jamis is nice! ‘Cause it’s kinda like Jia Meei.. And its short form is still Jam! :D
May 25th, 2008 at 5:54 am
I am actually another silent reader of yours but when it comes to voicing out ideas, I kinda refuse to keep quiet =P
Anyway, I think Jasmine suits you because among all the names, Jasmine sounds more like Jiameei (Does it?) Oh well, Jasmine Chen = Jiameei Chen.. Moreover, Jasmine is a disney princess too… Do consider…
After all, Jia Meei is still a sweet name… So dont hurry yourself to look for a name that you dont really need/ like.. =)
May 25th, 2008 at 6:05 am

May 25th, 2008 at 9:42 am
I personally think Jia Meei is a nice name already.. But if you insist, how about Gemma? (soft /g/, so like saying jam-a lol) Or you can spell it with a J too but doesn’t look as nice IMO. Here’s the link for Gemma (w/ a meaning too): http://www.behindthename.com/name/gemma
Good luck!
May 25th, 2008 at 10:41 am

May 25th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Jia Meei suits you best! I like your name as it is.. But Jamie sounds good, if you reallllllyyy have to get an English name. I have a friend named Jamie and she’s just as pretty as you so yeah when Alda wrote Jamie, immediately I concur to the name!
May 25th, 2008 at 10:23 pm
Omg, name choosing at this age is the hardest, ever!
I went through it in search for an office name myself and by gosh, you have to stick with it for life.
I believe there’s no other jia meeis out there, so i suggest if you were to choose an english name (and if you’re fussy about being possesive over your name), get a unique one :)
Like how you know there are a trillions natalies out there esp at work.. so pick something that makes you one of a kind.
Jalyn/Jaelyn perhaps?
May 25th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Oooh i scanned through the comments and Avery sounded so sweet! Or Anne, like anne of green gables love love love that book.
May 26th, 2008 at 2:39 am

Keshia: Ehh Avery that’s cuteeee. Yeah ’cause you known me as Jia Meei ma :)
Fiona: Aww thanks :) And yeah my friend Tze likes the name Gemma! Said she had a banker friend that goes by that name haha. I think it’s nice too hmmmn yay more options! Thank you and thank you for the meaning! Precious stone heh
Agnes: Hahaha but it’s not easy to remember my name really… But true! I agree that Chinese names are more personal ’cause English names are quite widely shared!
Yoyo: Another point to consider thank you! :D
Hanonymous: Edison C—-??? Hahahah canggih English name like like? Actually JM’s quite okay hor :/
Suet: Huhu girly girly names. Hahahaha yes and also whipped cream please
=.=: True true! :D
Ainul: Heehee that’s ’cause you’ve known me as Jia Meei foreverrrrr. Haha silly dear okok I’ll consider it!
Kit Mey: Yes at this age ughh. Haha so which office name did you settle for if you don’t mind me asking :p Yeah that’s true I don’t really want a common English name either ’cause it’ll defeat the purpose of making it memory friendly- “Mary? Marie? Mariah?” haha. Ooh I like Jaelyn!!
Elle: I HAD THE WHOLE COLLECTION!!! Avery is the… school no?
May 26th, 2008 at 8:32 am
I went through that whole process before I came to Oz, and I’m afraid my experience isn’t going to be of any value to you because I…..plucked the name Michelle out of thin air wtf. And I lived to regret it =(
Jia Meei suits you ok hon *shy* Plus the initials JM look cukup power too =)
But……..if you really really wanted to take on an Anglo first name, then my vote’s for Emily! I can’t explain it, but you just look like an Emily. However, I know you stuck with it for a few years during your teen and it didn’t suit, so…..hehehe, feel free to discount my opinion. Cos hon, at the end of the day, it’s yours that count!
Strangely enough, (in my humble and entirely personal opinion!) I think the name Phoebe would suit too. All the Phoebes and Emilys I’ve met have been absolute sweethearts.
So you see, it’s a matter of picking a name that will live up to your lovely personality =)
ps: What does Tat think?
pps: Cactus Chamomile wtf. Is that a new kind of herbal tea/ tisane wtf.
May 26th, 2008 at 11:59 am
I think you should call yourself Perempuan Melayu Terakhir Chen Jia Meei. To complement your boyfriend WTF!
May 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
HELLO CHOOSE ESTHER AND WE CAN HAVE THE SAME NAME! wheee!
I can be Esther 1 and you can be Esther 2! Or me as Esther A and you Esther B. Or maybe they can just call me der lyn and you you, jia meei lah what the heck.

May 26th, 2008 at 2:14 pm
Michellesy: But I think Michelle’s a really sweet name and most of the Michelles I know are lovely :D Why regret!! Hahaha well I stopped using it ’cause it got too confusing… but I am considering Emily! OOH I loved the name Phoebe! After watching FRIENDS /shy ’cause I am ditzy like that haha. Tat doesn’t care :( For him I go by “OI” and the occasional “B” haha!
Big tits: Dongggt make me go all the way to Damansara and… have lunch with you! wtf
Derlyn: HAHAHA how confusing is that?! Ish everyone calls you Lyn anyway Lynnie Lynnie Bobinie
Estherbobester: Haha yesh Jamie right?? HMMNN
May 26th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
